Interesting Things From Ages Long Ago
I watch several YouTube channels from stores that sell retro games and people that play them. I was watching one such video and I had a thought.
Video game preservation is important. We do not want old media to vanish. It is better for all of humanity that old stories be preserved, regardless of their format.
But does anybody care? Do very young people right now care? I am referring to people that are old enough to play video games. I'm talking about 5 year olds maybe. Will they grow up and care about the games that we played in 1986? Someone born in 2021 will be my age in 2067. Will they care about 81 year old games?
I doubt it. There may be some people that are interested in history. But they will not be the majority of people.
My grandmother was born in 1920. She passed away in 2010. What games did she play in 1926? I would be interested to find out. But I am the sort of person that enjoys antique shops. Those games are probably hidden in history books if they are even known at all.
I guess that my point is that retro video games are being collected and enjoyed by the people that were alive when they were released. Younger people may be interested in them now for any number of reasons. But in one or two generations, will anybody care anymore?
Things are enjoyed by those that lived with them. Those things have meaning to us. For everyone else yet to be born, they are possibly interesting things from ages long ago.
